NEW
SCHOOL OF ICONOGRAPHY!
A new school of iconography is due to begin this year. It
will be a serious four year part-time course, taught primarily
by Aidan Hart in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
Throughout its four year duration, classes will be held
once a month for eleven months of the year, on a Monday
and Tuesday. They will go from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an
evening lecture/discussion on Monday nights. Food will be
provided but not accommodation. See below for more information
about other related courses and how to apply.
Aidan will continue to run his usual May and September five-day
icon courses. See below for information and the registration
form for these.
ICON PAINTING WORKSHOPS WITH AIDAN HART FOR 2009
May 18-22 and September 14-18
at Walcot Hall, Lydbury North, Shropshire, SY9 8AZ
Two icon painting workshops are to be run by Aidan in 2009
May 18-22 and September 14-18. They will be held at the
beautiful manor of Walcot Hall, Lydbury North, Shropshire,
as in previous years.
The teaching
This year, as in previous years, we shall be having two
workshops, each of five days, at beautiful Walcot Hall in
Lydbury North, Shropshire.
In the May course we shall concentrate on the flesh parts:
faces and hands. The September course will concentrate on
garments and backgrounds. Both will include talks with slides.
We all do the same icon, with Aidan guiding us through the
different stages of building up colours in egg tempera on
a previously prepared gessoed board. There will be panels
on display that show an icon in different stages of completion.
Participants bring their own pigments and equipment. Successful
applicants will be sent a list of materials which they will
need to bring with them to the course, along with instructions
on how to make the gessoed board that they will need to
make beforehand. They will also be sent a print of the icon
that we shall be working on: students will be expected to
do a drawing of this before the workshop begins, so that
we have maximum time for learning painting skills during
the course itself.
Each course consists of around seven hours tuition per day
(9.00-5.00 pm except Monday when 10.30 –5.00, and Friday
when 9.00-2.00 pm). There are places for twelve participants.
The cost
The cost for
the teaching is £290, with a non-refundable £30 deposit
at registration (but this will be refunded if there are
no places available). This includes a substantial cooked
lunch and morning and afternoon teas with biscuits and cakes.
The non-refundable balance of £260 is due a month before
the course begins; an invoice will be mailed about two weeks
before that due date.
For accommodation, see below.
Accommodation
The course offers
self-catering accommodation at Walcot Hall for up to eight
people, in three apartments (the Arni, Styche and Montfort).
There are eight spacious bedrooms between them, along with
two kitchens and two living rooms (the third kitchen and
living rooms are used for the teaching). Accommodation is
booked through the course and not directly.
The cost is £175 per person. This includes the linen and
the food supplies for you to make your own breakfast. A
non-refundable £20 deposit is required at registration (but
will be refunded if no places are available).
The accommodation is available from 10.00 am Monday until
2.00 pm Friday. Unfortunately the rooms are not available
for the Sunday night before the course, nor the Friday night
after. If you need accommodation for these nights, you can
seek for rooms at the following local places:
- Brumslow Farm phone 01588 680244
- Walcot Farm phone 01588 680243
Registration
Usually demand
exceeds the number of places available and so not everyone
can be accepted onto the courses. You will be notified either
way as soon as possible. If you apply and there are no spaces
free, then I will refund your deposit.
For those of you who would like to come to both courses,
in the registration form below I ask you to indicate which
of the two courses has priority for you, so that if there
is over-demand I will try to get you into at least this
one.
Successful applicants will be sent in due course a detailed
explanation of materials and equipment required.

NEW
SCHOOL OF ICONOGRAPHY
A NEW
PROGRAMME OF LITURGICAL ARTS TO BE FORMED AT
THE PRINCE’S SCHOOL OF LITURGICAL ARTS.
THE NEED
The visual arts
have always played a major role in Christianity’s liturgical
life. From the catacombs of the first centuries to the many
thousands of churches throughout the world today, we can
see how people have affirmed divine beauty in masterpieces
of icon and wall painting, mosaic, stained glass, sculpture
– in just about every medium.
There is now increased demand for liturgical art crafted
with the same skill and theological understanding of these
great traditional works.
Yet the liturgical arts are not currently taught in depth
in the English-speaking world. There is pressing need to
teach these skills in the context of Christian spirituality
and theology.
THE SCHOOL
The unique Prince’s
School of Traditional Arts, whose President is HRH The Prince
of Wales, has taught traditional skills at postgraduate
level for over twenty years. In response to requests it
now proposes to extend its Liturgical Arts programme at
vocational level.
The new courses, under the direction of Aidan Hart, aim
to reach out to an international range of students. Aidan
is a renowned iconographer, fresco painter and carver of
over twenty-five years experience. He has work in over fourteen
countries and in many British Cathedrals, and has taught,
written and lectured widely.
The programme will offer a part-time four year Diploma in
icon and wall painting, plus a range of short courses. We
will offer a combination of practical training with the
teaching of theology, history and use of liturgical art.
The programme’s approach will be based on the theology of
the icon, and aims to help meet the liturgical needs of
all the Christian Churches, both in the U.K. and abroad.
COURSES
The first phase
of the School programme will include:
- Icon and Wall Painting
Diploma
A four year part-time
Diploma course with Aidan Hart, planned to commence in October
2009. Throughout its four year duration, classes will be
held once a month for eleven months of the year, on a Monday
and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an evening lecture/discussion
on Monday nights. Food will be provided. Accommodation is
not provided. Classes will be held in the medieval town
of Shrewsbury, Shropshire. There will also be field trips
and additional five day courses. Students in addition will
be expected to do at least 2 hours of painting studies a
week in their own time.
Areas to be studied will include:
Pigment and panel preparation; techniques of egg tempera
icon painting and manuscript illumination; theology of the
icon; studies of icon masterpieces; the relationship of
iconography and church architecture and worship; techniques
of secco and fresco wall painting; introduction to mosaic
technique; business skills.
In the summer of 2009
we plan to offer five-day courses in icon painting, stained
glass, stone letter carving, calligraphy, manuscript illumination,
and gilding. Some courses will introduce students to elementary
skills, while others teach more advanced techniques. Locations
will be varied.
SUPPORT
We are delighted
to have received letters of support and encouragement from
the leaders of three main Churches in the U.K. Archbishop
Gregorios of the Greek Orthodox Church in Great Britain;
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor of the Roman Catholic Church;
and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, of
the Anglican Church.
